History of the Tonkinese
During the 1800’s there were a
number of Siamese cats imported to America. There was no consistency to the coat
pattern of these Siamese. Some of these Siamese cats had points which gradually
blended into their coats and were later named Chocolate Siamese or Golden
Siamese.
In the 1930's Dr Joseph Thompson
brought a walnut coloured cat with pointed ears, feet and tail to California
named Wong Mau. This cat was believed to be a dark coloured Siamese but since
has been proven genetically to be Tonkinese. Wong Mau was bred with a Seal Point
Siamese which produced a Siamese offspring and offspring like herself. One of
the male offspring was cross bred with Wong Mau producing three types of coat
patterns. A Siamese coat pattern, a solid colour which is now known as the
Burmese and a mink coated cat which is the coat pattern of a Tonkinese. Breeders
of Tonkinese and Burmese can trace their lines back to this cat.
The Tonkinese of today come in
various colour's and coat patterns. The coat patterns produced are Mink, Pointed
and Solids with the mink being the main coat pattern.
A lot of cat associations do not
recognize Tonkinese cats as a breed because its a hybrid breed between Siamese
and Burmese but Tonkinese cats have roamed Thailand jungles for centuries. There
are pictures of Tonkinese cats in ancient Thailand manuscripts.
Tonkinese make perfect house cats and are very intelligent.
Tonkinese are the sort of cats that enjoy heaps of attention. One of our last
customers told us how they flick a rubber band across the room and the cat
fetches it and brings it back to him. |
